Kathrine Switzer: First Woman to Enter the Boston Marathon

For the Dragonwing team, this video makes us emotional – especially when Jock Semple tries to pull her out. Kathrine’s quote “all of a sudden this was very important … nobody believes I can do this.. and if I don’t finish, people will think all women can’t.” she finished in 4 hrs and 20 min. KV Switzer (and whoever wears #261 -how lucky are you!)

We love this Strong Like Switzer costume! Great way to honor a legend AND be scary! We love Katherine Switzer and @amightygirl. https://business.facebook.com/DragonwingGirlGear/posts/ From A Mighty Girl's post: Our annual 10-day Halloween Costume Countdown continues for day 9 with this Mighty Girl in her 'Strong Like Switzer' costume! When Kathrine Switzer signed up for the Boston Marathon in 1967, women were barred from participating in what was then a male-only event. She was issued an entry number, however, because she had registered using her initials. Once the race started, an official attempted to drag her off the route after he realized that a woman was running. As captured in this famous photo, other runners came to her assistance and Switzer was able to complete the marathon, becoming the first woman to officially run the world's oldest annual marathon. Kathrine Switzer's inspiring story is told in a fantastic new picture book "Her Fearless Run: Kathrine Switzer's Historic Boston Marathon" for ages 6 to 10 at https://www.amightygirl.com/her-fearless-run For adults who would like to read more about Kathrine Switzer's fascinating story, we highly recommend her autobiography, "Marathon Woman: Running the Race to Revolutionize Women's Sports," at https://www.amightygirl.com/marathon-woman For a wonderful t-shirt that speaks to the fact that strength has nothing to do with gender, check out the “I'm not strong for a girl. I'm just strong.” t-shirt for both kids and adults at https://www.amightygirl.com/strong-t-shirt
