Boxes of Donated Sports Bras for Girls!

Earlier this month, we put out a call for donations of clean, gently-used sports bras for needy girls taking part in Goals for Girls wellness and education programs in India. The response from the Dragonwing girlgear community has been terrific. With each envelope or box that arrives, we are so grateful for and humbled by your generosity.

The remarkable women at Ladies Only Sports, a terrific family-owned business for active women of all shapes and sizes (check them out!), sent a big box of 30 brand new sports bras!

Thank you Ladies Only Sports for donating a box of sports bras to help keep girls in the game!

As I’ve said many times, a girl’s sports bra can mean the difference between sitting on the sidelines and being able to play. Each of these donated sports bras empowers a girl to get in — and stay in — the game and reap the many benefits that sports participation brings. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

If you’d like to donate, here’s the information:

Cool Weather Athletic Clothing for Girls

We must be having fun because time is flying! Fall arrived this week and that means cooler temperatures, especially in the afternoon and evening. It’s time to add a thermal base layer, so girls stay warm, dry, and comfortable when playing sports.

Our Chill Weight sports leggings and long-sleeve fitted tops make the perfect cool weather layer for athletic girls. Girls stay warm and dry and can play without distraction — no shivering, no bunching or drooping leggings, no tugging at tops that ride up in back. Wear them alone, under uniforms or skirts, or under cold-weather sports gear (great for skiing, too!).

Climbing Competitions & the Power of Smiling

It’s September already!! The summer was one of the best and, sadly, the shortest. I’m so glad I’ve had the opportunity to be part of Dragonwing girlgear, an amazing company that supports active girls like me and many others. If you’re interested in becoming an Ambassador, leave a comment or send an email.

I’m an 8th grader this year and super excited with the start of the school year and with ABS season for climbing. I’ve already had my first local comp and it was a blast! I placed 8 out of 15 but tried a majority of the problems they set. (My Un-Dee Mini Workout Shorts are great for climbing!)

My next competitions are coming up very quickly and I can’t wait for them. On September 26 – this weekend! — is another comp of mine, a Youth American Ninja Warrior compettion! That will be super exciting, and I hope my mom will catch some great photos to share. Subscribe to this blog so you won’t miss them!

In climbing class, we’ve just finished our endurance phase, which is always the hardest, and now we’re hopping into the strength phase. This season, our coaches are challenging and helping us a lot.

One of my coaches taught us a “centering” technique that helps if you’re nervous or anxious at a comp or class. One of the strategies was smiling! That may sound weird, but smiling (just moving your face into a smile) usually makes you feel better in a stressful situation even if you don’t have a “real” reason to smile. Try it!

That’s all for now. Until my next post, remember to smile!

Donate Girl's Sports Bra & Help Girl Stay in the Game

A sports bra can mean the difference between a girl sitting on the sidelines and being able to play. Without the proper coverage, fit, and support of a sports bra, girls are often too self-conscious or uncomfortable being physically active, so they miss out on the many life- and skill-building benefits – and fun – that sports and athletic activity convey. As a parent, I know that a great sports bra can help give my daughter the opportunity to play her best.

This is especially true for girls in the developing world. That’s why we’ve partnered with our good friends at Goals for Girls to bring sports bras to teen girls in India. Goals for Girls connects girls from different countries and backgrounds with their peers around the world to address social and health challenges through cultural exchange, service, and soccer. Earlier this year, I saw the power of these exchanges when the U15 Women’s National Soccer Team from Jordan visited North Carolina.

“Sports bras are our most-needed item,” says Cindy Parlow Cone, soccer superstar, coach, and Dragonwing spokesperson. As part of Goals for Girls, she’s leading a team of US teen girl soccer players to India in January for a ten-day cultural exchange, including lots of soccer playing.

We’re hoping to send Cindy and the US Goals for Girls delegation to India with a suitcase full of sports bras, generously donated by the Dragonwing girlgear community.

Sighted at Girls’ Soccer Tournament

Like most sports parents, I can’t tell you how many miles I’ve traveled to and from girls’ soccer tournaments since my daughter started playing. While the fields, highways, and hotels may begin to look the same, I never fail to get a jolt of excitement when I spot one of these:

As my thanks for reading our Sideline Chatter blog, I’ll send a magnet to any reader who writes to request one. Just email me with your mailing address.

My Road to Recovery

As a fencer, I love Dragonwing clothes because they keep me comfortable when I’m doing intense workouts. Unfortunately, I have not been able to do what I love lately due to a knee injury.

In May, I was told I have a condition called patellar tendonitis. Basically, it’s an overuse injury that, when aggravated, leads to inflammation of a tendon in my knee. Considering that I play a sport that requires lots of leg work and strain on my knees, you might see how my injury could be a serious setback.

Even though I’ve been spending a lot of time doing exercises and physical therapy, the hardest part of my recovery process is simply not being able to do the sport that I love. I’ve been fencing for five years and have never gone this long without fencing.

Luckily, the summer is the slowest time of the year when it comes to tournaments, as the number of national level tournaments is very limited. I normally do lots of training over the summer, but this time I took a seven-week break from my sport and focused on my recovery. I spent a few hours almost every day with either my physical therapist, chiropractor, or swimming trainer. Here I am doing plank exercises on the porch — in my Dragonwing Racer Sports Bra and Chill Weight Capri Leggings, of course!

Because swimming is a low impact form of exercise, I could do it for as long as I want without injuring myself any further. In fact, the swimming helps speed up my recovery because it develops many of the muscles that I don’t use as much when I fence.

My chiropractor and physical therapist give me stretches and exercises that will eventually get rid of my tendonitis. I do these exercises with them and every day at home. About three times a week, I will go to my fencing club and take a 20 minute one-on-one lesson with my coach where I do mostly arm work with some light footwork and no lunging.

I’m determined to get better as soon as I can so that I don’t have to worry about my knee when I am older and my injury could be worse.
